Hello fellow lawn lovers! I've been asked to moderate this forum and help out with general housekeeping. I consider this an opportunity; not a chore. Talking about lawns seems to come easy for me.

One thing I want to mention at this outset is that I'm here to learn, too. I have problems I don't have answers to and I've read other posts that I can't help with. I consider myself fairly informed, not a beginner, a good listener, willing to change my mind, and eager to learn. As a matter of fact, I've learned quite a lot, both good and bad, from gardeners who rely on synthetic chemicals in their turf. So I welcome all opinions.

I know there are multiple opinions about how to care for a lawn. I think most people attracted to the Dirt Doctor site are organic oriented which cuts down on a lot of other opinions. Whew! But still I find that organic gardening covers a wide range of opinions. Mine is only one - no more right than any other.

I've written answers to Frequently Asked Questions and posted them in this forum. I'm going to repost them and move them to the top of the forum and keep it there for awhile at least. Anyone else who would like to contribute to that list of answers is welcome to help.

So lets have some fun and try this thing out!

Thanks Dave for being the moderator. I enjoy reading your posts and learn something from each one. You seem to have a good understanding of what organic is and why and how it is beneficial to go 'Organic'. How long have you been organic? Keep up the good work and we can all learn from each other and our experiences. I must also thank Howard and Leslie for providing this forum for us to ask questions and exchange ideas.
To each and every one, keep up the great posts.

At the risk of sacrificing my credibility, I'll tell you that I've only been organic for a year or so. I started using corn meal in Feb of 2001 on my roses. It worked so well all year that I tried it again last year on the roses along with corn gluten meal on my grass. That worked so well that I decided to just stop using any chemicals at all.

My total poundage of chemicals in the past 10 years has been very small. I've basically neglected to apply anything but water.

Historically, going back 30 years, I helped my first wife get her degree in ornamental horticulture in California. Fortunately (or unfortunately) I still remember a bunch of what we learned together. Since then I've had 5 houses with yards to take care of. I used chemicals on all of them until 2001.

More recently, my organic training has come from Bob Webster, Malcolm Beck, and Howard Garrett via the radio and personal visits with Bob and Malcolm. I have also read everything I could find that Dr Elaine Ingham has written on the Soil Food Web. I've also found some excellent resources around the web and tried to learn what I could from them.

I'd love to chat more about this but I'm on vacation right now and someone is waiting for the computer I'm sitting at. So...gotta go, folks.

Hi dcHall,
I was just wondering why not have a pro's and con's of Bahiagrass which is very common in Florida. Unfortunately, I can only think of cons, but with a little edyakation people might not make the mistake of using this grass if they would have known more about it.

"Dchall_San_Antonio"]Hello fellow lawn lovers! I've been asked to moderate this forum and help out with general housekeeping. I consider this an opportunity; not a chore. Talking about lawns seems to come easy for me".

hello - I've just joined the forum and tried to get help from the forum (one of the reasons why I paid $30.00) - Sofar no help at all - is it me? I know there's a lot of info on this site but I simply don't have too much time and my lawns are new. I'm a new comer to gardening and I have about $8,000 invested in a watering system and lawns. Needless to say, I'm looking for a earth friendly way to look after the lawns. You can see why I'm looking for help ;-) I really took the time to list my problems and photos to see if I could get some help. I know I'm new but this is a "cold" site sofar - nothing real friendly here.

would you not agree? - check my posts and see if I made some mistake or offend anybody - cheers Dchall

any advice would be welcomed

best

Big Green

Funny you should ask about that organic lawn care faq. Some time ago the forum administrator decided to release all the sticky messages that had not had recent activity. Never mind that the stickies were viewed hundreds of times per week. I tried for a day or two to recover the stickies but found that I no longer had the forum moderator tools available to me. I hope they fired that administrator. This lawn forum relied on those stickies to answer 75% of all the questions asked. With such low participation I found myself answering most of the questions myself and that was too much. I had not been happy with dwindling participation in the DD forums for a year or two, but the decision to release the stickies pretty much was the last straw for me. I can't moderate a forum effectively if someone else is making major decisions...and they don't provide the tools.

I participate daily in other Internet organic lawn forums and only stop by here occasionally to get an answer to a question I know lives here somewhere.

The participation in the Dirt Doctor Forums has grown dramatically. Several thousand people visit and find useful information and advice in this forum every day. DirtDoctor.com is rated as one of the top natural organic gardening and living web sites in the U.S.

As the content in the forums has grown to over 31,000 posts, people can search and find most of the answers they are looking for, and thus do not log in and ask questions. The Dirt Doctor Library also provides a wealth of answers for people's questions.

I agree that one element we do not enjoy enough is free flowing banter and exchanges. We have been under the thinking that it is a benefit to have a forum where anyone can read the information, but the posts would be from people with some real interest in natural organic gardening and living. We feel that we are serving this goal, but have received a few comments to make the Dirt Doctor forums more of a gathering place where people can visit and chat. We agree that this openness is also important and are considering making this forum more accessible.

If you have any comments regarding keeping this forum as it is or making any changes regarding access or anything else, please let me know either through this forum or you can write me at doug@dirtdoctor.com.

Thank you.
