Can anyone tell me the least poisonous and easiest way to get rid of a stand of bamboo? The stand surrounds my backyard and is about 3-6 feet thick.

Dig it completely out including the roots...every bit of root too. That should definetly do it.

We got rid of a bamboo stand in So California when I was a kid by digging it out -- and doing it again every couple of months for a couple of years..... GOOD LUCK. Bamboo is very hardy !

Would the famous squirting-it-with-strong-vinegar routing would work on bamboo?
Anybody know?

Cut it down!!! Then take a sharp shooter to the Rysomes. Bamboo does not penetrate deep but lives by the rysome. If you keep the rysomes broken you will succesfully kill the bamboo. If you feel you must keep some of the stuff, ask your nursery about clumping varieties. After removing it run it through the Chipper it makes fantastic looking mulch.

You will need to use diligence to get rid of this stand of bamboo. When I was young we had a thick stand in our back yard in southern CA. It took us about 4 years to completely get rid of it. We would dig it up a few times a year but all it takes is ONE little bit of root and here it comes again and spreads and spreads, again and again.
