I mixed a gallon of water with 4 oz. of Garrett Juice Plus and added 2 oz. of orange oil and then sprayed my zinnias with my trombone sprayer after reading another post that said orange oil (or hot pepper spray) should kill Japanese beetles (that were feasting on said zinnias this morning).

Given that mixture, should have the orange oil killed the beetles immediately? It did not. Would such a mixture take a longer time?

I hand-removed them one-by-one and dropped them into a milk jug with a few ounces of orange oil all by itself and swished them around -- THAT killed them.

So, my question is:

How much more orange oil should be enough to kill the beetles while at the same time keep from harming the plant itself?

I know it's a delicate balance and I'm looking for a "sweet spot" but I'd rather get everyone's advice here before going hog-wild with the orange oil.

Thanks folks!

If you go to the main page and click on Library, then click on "O" for orange oil you'll find lots of info..like this:

Orange oil is a pleasant smelling solvent. Commercial d-limonene at full strength can replace a wide variety of products, including mineral spirits, methly ethyl ketone, acetone, toluene and glycol ethers. Be careful when using strong solutions since it can melt plastic and ruin paint finishes. For most practical purposes, 1 - 2 ounces per gallon of water should be the maximum concentration.

Maybe I should re-phrase my question:

Has anyone successfully killed Japanese beetles using the prescribed Garret Juice-to-Orange Oil recipe from their own jug of Garrett Juice Plus? (defined as one gallon of water, 4 oz. of Garrett Juice Plus, and 2 oz. of orange oil)

If Yes, then I perhaps I have not waited long enough to see the results.

If No, then should I seek an alternate solution once the beetles are actually on the plant? (hand-removing and stomping, drenching in a jug of concentrated orange oil, etc.)

Is orange oil, using the prescribed recipe from this website, an effective killer of Japanese beetles?

Thanks again.

update...

Noote to self in my garden journal... do not apply orange oil (using the prescribed 2 oz. of oil to gallon of water plus 4 oz. of Garrett Juice) to Moonflowers. Use either 1 oz. or just 1/2 oz. or none. Some plants had no reaction to the oil at that concentration at all, but the Moonflowers have already started to wilt as if they've been nuked with Roundup.
