Saturday looking for a safe product for using on Kittens for fleas. I came across the information for the Lice B Gone. So I looked online to see where I could buy this product and found it a nursery in Nolanville, TX.
I spoke with the owner there and she told me that the product was very safe also. So I bought it. Now after applying this to my kittens I have two near dead. I am not even kidding about this. These kittens were healthy, playful kittens. And after applying this product to them they licked on their coats. I never dreamed that this product would affect them the way it has. I have not taken the kittens to the vet because I cannot afford it. I did call the company and Diane Brown who lives in Irving and has a Dog Grooming shop. She promotes this product and swears by its safeness. After talking to her she said that she has never used it on Cats or Kittens but knew of someone at the local shelter who has and the cat got sick also. I cannot get the kittens to eat at all. I am forcing water into them with a syringe. They have no energy and are not moving. I don't think that they will live much longer.
I am very upset about this and I wanted to get the word out that this product is not safe. I also feel like these people are trying to push their product and couldn't care less about my Kittens.
Sincerely,
Pamela Dragoo

Pam,

Did the kittens make it through the night? Does Lice B Gone have a list of ingredients on it? If it does, maybe you could just call a vet and ask them what could be done -- most good vets are willing to give free help over the phone.

Thank you for posting the warning for the rest of us, and I hope your kittens get better

Judith

The close time correlation seems suspicious, and it may be that there is something in the product that affects kittens. There are plenty of products that don't seem to hurt adults (if Lice B' Gone doesn't, that is), but that can't be used on kittens. I would remove fleas from a kitten only by picking them off and/or giving them a warm bath under conditions where they will not get chilled. My personal view is that topical flea treatments are too harsh for kittens. If Lice B' Gone is toxic to cats, we need to know it.

I don't know exactly what's in Lice B' Gone (maybe only the makers know), so I'll address other possibilities. I've seen instances where outdoor kittens are so adversely affected by fleas, worms, and maybe even ticks that they are too deep into anemia to save, even by transfusion, by the time one realizes that they are infested. By the time one realizes that a kitten is anemic, mortality can be rapid. Did/do they have pale-to-white gums? Are/were they dehydrated? How was/is their temperature? They may have/have had worms as well -- tapeworms, roundworms, even hookworms -- that contribute to malnutrition and anemia. Kittens can be suprisingly vulnerable to hypothermia, and a combination of parasites, malnutrition, and non-ideal external conditons easily can be fatal. Even an intesive care vet facility may not be able to save them under those types of conditons.

The kitten did survive through the night. It looks really bad though. Its eyes are all mattered shut it has mucus coming from its nose and mouth. It is having trouble breathing. I almost wish it would die and be out of its misery. I called a friend of ours who is a vet. He travels all over Texas so I haven't been able to reach him. I am waiting on him to call me back. The kitten is not eating or drinking. I talked to a local vets office and they told me to bring the kitten in and they would put it on an IV and start blood test. I asked them if I could make payments and they said no. So, I told them that their was no way that I could afford to pay it all in full right now. So, he told me to start giving the kitten Pedialite. I have and also I put Pedialite in a small bowl and mixed in a tiny amount of infant rice cereal and a tiny amount of wet cat food. I have been trying to get food into the kitten with a syringe. It seems to know that I am trying to help it but its nose is so clogged up with mucus that it is unable to breath so it is using the little strength to fight it way away from me. I am just sick about this. I am so upset with this company. They are basically acting like I should have known better then to let the kitten lick on its self. Maybe they need to rework their label.
Thank you so much for your concern.
Pam

I find it strange that your kittens are sick because of the Flea and Tick B Gone. I have 6-ten week old kittens that I have been using the Flea and Tick B Gone on for 2 weeks now without a problem. They may have a bit of foam after the lick but this product does foam with water. It may be that another problem exists and just came to light.
I bought the product at the show in January and even spoke to the creator, He said that only food enzymes are used. Heck, even the man at the booth I bought it at sprayed it in his mouth to show how safe it is.
I also raise bird dogs and have used it on the puppies since January without a problem at all.
As you may have noticed, I live in the country and do have a problem with fleas and ticks. This is the only thing I have found that will kill the little pests.
I hope that your kittens are okay, but I dont think it was the flea and tick b gone that caused it.

I would like to set the record straight on my using the Flea N Tick B Gone. I have been using this product in my groom shop for over a year without one animal getting sick. As I told Pam on the phone I do not groom cats in my shop only because I am not set up to do so for I am not able to keep the felines and canines separated. But I have used this product on cats and kittens and have many customers who have also used this product successfully. I use a variety of shampoos, conditioners, and Flea n Tick B Gone on a daily basis but common sense tells me not to let the animals lick while sitting in any solutions. We also use shampoos prescribed by our customers vets and no where on the label does it state do not let animal lick but again common sense tells me not to. This product is made of enaymes of natural food products and filtered water. I would never use or promote anything that was not safe to use on animals. My mission is to take care of animals. My shop is a specialty shop where we specialize in elderly, physically challenaged, and animals that require special needs as well as healthy animals. If at anytime I would have had a doubt or any problem using this product on these animals I would not do so.
For any one that is reading this post and are using these products and your animal starts to lick themselves, try wrapping the animal in a towel so not to allow them to do so. Some animals maybe allergic to even the most organic natural ingredients.
When I emailed Pam my concern was for her kittens. After she had told me that they were flea infested and being so young I was also very concerned about their immune system being very weak and advised her to give them Nutrical a vitamin supplement for puppies and kittens.
As far as the kitten at the shelter she is fine and very healthy. The worker apologize for her neglect in how she applied the Flea n Tick B Gone.
Pam, I sincerely hope your kittens get better.

Oh my, after reading all this I am heartbroken. There is no response as to what happened to the little kittens, I assume they didn't make it. This just breaks my heart. I have taken in many strays and nursed them to health. I always find the little ones, 6 weeks therebouts. I always give them a nice warm bath and use dish soap, then I fluff them with the blow dryer. I never put anything on them until they are about 3-4 months old, because kittens are so 'iffy'. I think these kittens mentioned maybe had weak immune systems and therefore the treatment just caused them to become very sick. If they had fleas pretty bad, then the fleas alone could have made them weak. Another thing a lot of people don't know about kittens. You should never give them regular 'milk'. Their digestive system is unable to digest it properly, thus causing severe problems. If you have a young kitten always start it off with 'goats milk' (canned milk found on the canned milk isle) You mix the milk half milk half water. After a can of this milk or possibly two cans, then you can switch to just regular canned milk. Goats milk is about 1.95 at the store and it will make double the can in milk, since you mix it with half water. Its just as good as what the vet sells as 'kitten milk', which sells for almost 4.00 for a can of about 4-6 ounces. They can take this goats milk until they are good and healthy, then just give them their regular food. After cats are about 6 months to 1 year they can then have 'some' milk from a carton.

I am very sorry for Pam's kittens. I hope they made it, but the fact that they were having respiratory problems leads me to believe they probably did not make it. It could mean also that the little kittens injested some of this solution and that would have been bad also. I know vets need to make a living, but I wish there was a program to help people who are on fixed budgets. At least he was willing to give some advise over the phone.
