I want to create a small flagstone patio under my pecan trees. They don't have root flares so I want to know what to do. How do I treat the root flare situation? How far should I stay from the trees? How much I can build up with sand under the flagstone for leveling and drainage. I've read that 2 inches deep or so is ok without threatening the root system. These are three huge old trees all within about a 100 sq. ft. area. The drip line is a long way away from where I plan to put the flagstone.
I just want a small flat place to put some chairs. any advice?
