I used expanded shale for the first time this season. i got it in Dallas at North Haven Gardens..I cannot imagine why it is not considered organic. My Dallas Dirt is basically black clay, and the expanded shale has really improved it.

According to Howard, expanded shale is fine; just too expensive. Lava sand is what I use.
