My newly planted dogwood trees (about 1" calibre) are not looking so hot. Leaves are turning brown and drooping. We've applied nitrogen. Any other suggestions?

Define 'nitrogen' - what exactly did you apply?

When did you plant the trees, and what sort of fertilization/care does your yard get?

Bear in mind that in even the best organically-maintained yards that first year in the ground trees will often be puny until they're better established.

The nursery recommended a Miracle Grow fertilizer, with about an 11% nitrogen mix. We're told our soil here is acid poor, and this mix also had acidic additive. Principally, no significant fertilization has been done since the trees were planted in mid-March. Watering has been moderate after a particularly wet spring. Other trees in the vicinity, pecans, redoak, are doing well. One of the dogwoods looks more prosperous than the other.

Definitely don't recommend using that stuff around here. It's too fast and then washes away too quickly. Kind of like giving a kid straight sugar when they're hungry.

You'll find a number of great ideas and plenty of info on the site about the Natrural Way and the organic methods we use. It is true that most of the soils in this region are fairly alklai, thus many of the feeding methods we use have a touch of apple cider vinegar in them. Also, you'll find that a site maintained with the natrual methods, especially with the balancing abilities of compost, the soil will become richer and the acid/alkalai balance will become ideal.

Giving the trees a round of the Sick Tree Treatment, as recorded at the top of this forum, will definitely help them have a better chance at getting established this first year in the ground.
