With the wet weather of the last week I've noticed a lot of digging into the raised beds in my garden. Last night I scattered some dog hair around a hole in the middle of my zucchini planting, and tonight I found a new hole several feet away. As I peered into it a mouse stuck its head into the opening and gazed back at me! I've scattered more dog hair (lucky I have two that shed a lot, and after I brush them I keep the hair for this kind of thing).

I've had some problems with them over the last few years, I live next to a creek and there is an extensive contiguous wild greenbelt the wraps around my end of this neighborhood along the creek. Plenty of rodents in there to discover the garden over here.

Scattered dog hair is a piecemeal approach - I wonder if anyone has any experience with things like "Nature's Defense" that is all herbs and garlic. Would garlic pepper tea have any effect on mice? It would certainly be cheaper than the commercial product. Here is a link to a PDF of the MSDS.

Fox urine may work.

I have some canid relatives here. I wonder if I could get the dogs to pee in the garden. ;) Thanks, Sandi.

I need to start by working my way through the garden with the mattock to pull out some big grassy weeds. That might discourage them. If they stick around then I'll look for that kind of repellent.

I had a large rat/mouse take up residence in my native garden last year. The neighborhood feral cats took care of it.

Two of my dogs are gung-ho mousers, but they'd destroy the garden in pursuit of the mice. A few years ago there were mice in a compost pile/berm I was building in the front yard, and every so often I'd take the girls out and let them root around. They wagged, jumped around, sniffed, dug in, and in general worked that mound hard. The prospect of this kind of project gives them real pleasure. :)
