We had a couple of burr oaks planted last year and they had a rough summer. Seemed like they were still struggling some as we went into winter. They have not gotten any new leaves yet and I was wondering if that is normal?
Seems like most of the trees in our neighborhood are full of leaves, our red buds have bloomed and are getting leaves and our chinese pistaches are getting leaves too, but not our oaks.
Does anyone else have burr oaks that are growing leaves?

Thanks,
nicole

I have two. One is somewhat ahead of the other but they both have leaves and some are up to a couple inches long now.

I'm in McKinney, my leaves are just starting to pop. Scratch the bark at various places on the trees with your fingernail. If it is lime green, it's still alive. Start fertilizing with organic fertilizer and spray the tree (even tho it doesn't have leaves) with Garrett Juice.

I have a burlaped bur oak entering its second year. I honestly thought it was
dead, but the nursery said to scratch the bark and see if it was green underneath. It was, and now just a few days later, buds are popping all over the tree. But every other tree in the neighborhood, all the post oaks, were well out ahead of it.
Next year I will know not to panic, that the bur oaks wait till last. BTW, I have a second bur, a small one, that was in a container and thus, none of its roots had ever been chopped. It budded out a week ahead of the balled/burlapped one.

Thanks so much for all of the responses, I'll take a peak underneath and hope to see green.
Let you know,

Ok, one of them looks good, it actually has two little fresh buds on a branch. The other has green underneath one branch, but not under another. Is it possible some of the branches died but the tree still lives?

Thanks for your help,
nicole

Here's a Monday morning update for you.
Burr oaks make the phrase "growing like a weed"
take on a whole new meaning.
