Hi

I recently within the last week had two 4 inch 20 ft. bradford pear trees planted in my back yard used for privacey. In a nut shell I want to add another but need to reloacate the two just planted.

Question:
Would harm come to these 2 bradford pear trees by re-planting, moving. Keep in mind they have only been in place for 6 days. Burlap sack and all.

thanks

Give the root ball a shot of water and you're fine.

Keep in mind to follow the tree planting rules listed at the top of the forum for best results.

Get the burlap sack off of them! Your need to check for roots circling (cut & break loose) and to find the original proper tree height. The root flare needs to be exposed. Ck the following.

Are the wire baskets still in place ( if the burlap is still on I would asume they are ) if so lift them out by hooking the wire baskets - It's common practice with ball & burlap to simply place the tree then push the basket and burlap below the soil surface before backfilling the hole. I wouldn't try removing the basket or burlap unless you have a very firm rootball as you risk breaking up the rootball and further damaging the allready heavily damaged root system. If there is no wire basket I would have the tree moved with a tree spade (the same tool used to dig it from the field) as this will firmly support the root ball.

A new trend is evolving in the Southern U.S. and making its way north - actually it fairly old now but there's reluctance to change - trees are being field grown in fiber bags that in short (very short) produce a far superior root system to B&B. the end result is a tree that transplants very well and exibits far superior growth after transplant as well it eliminates root spiraling. Seek out a nursery in your area using this system and try one of thier trees. Your looking for field grown trees in "grow bags". Just don't forget with these trees you MUST remove the bag.

Have fun...

I transplanted my bradford pear to the backyard. It didn't do too good in the front. After I took it to the back, and removed the burlap sack at the same time, it is now sprouting like it never has before.

It really liked to move to the back, and it was in the front for about 5 months prior, so I'd say you don't have anything to worry about.

One of the planters told me that it does not harm the tree to keep the burlap sack on. Obviously it does. It never really grew out of the sack.
