Hi I am new here but I have a question. I have some Birdseye pepper
seeds that I would like to plant. I need to know how deep to plant them
and do I use Miracle grow or just water when planting them.
I was thinking about planting them 1/4" to 1/2" deep. I would appreciate any advice . Thanks. JJ

There's a general rule of thumb I go by for planting depths. The smaller the seed, the shallower it needs to be planted. If you want to plant pepper seeds 1/4", it will probably work, but I wouldn't plant them any deeper. I broadcast carrot and lettuce seeds on top of the ground and get good germination rates. When I plant tomato seeds (similar to pepper seeds), I drop them on the soil surface and barely poke them into the ground with a small pointed instrument (or a nail or whatever is handy, lol). When I plant seeds of cucurbits, I usually plant them about half an inch deep, and for corn, beans, or peas, usually about an inch.

Oh, forgot to add: I never fertilize seedlings when I first plant. I want the weaklings to be weeded out and the tougher ones to be in the garden. When I do fertilize, I usually add some blood meal and bone meal to the garden when I'm getting it ready to plant, and I usually start my seedlings in containers then transplant. Compost will also help get your garden dirt healthier.
