Ok, I messed up and put a bird feeder outside our front window in our garden. What’s happening is that every dang seed is sprouting and making a "MESS" in our finely groomed garden.

What is the best solution for this?
Should I dig/pull out current problems areas?
Find seed that will not SPROUT. :")
Move the feeder?

I want to stay away from treating the area with more organic products.

Thanks in advance,
Shaun

I made the same mistake a few years back and I am still suffering the consequences. My recommendation is:

  1. Move the feeder
  2. Dig out several feet around the feeder (or the seeds will come back)
  3. Replace with new soil and amendments

Bad part is if your feeder is still near the flowr bed or garden you will probably end up with some stragglers.

Good luck.

Boy.... have I been there! :o

The best way to avoid this in future is put the seed in the microwave for about 30 seconds on high. It "kills" the seed and stops it from germinating. You may have to do it in batches and adjust the time.

Put a boatload of corn gluten meal down after you clean out the sprouting ones and it will lessen your future worries.

Clean out & mulch in the area of the feeder where the seed is being dropped and use the vinegar weed spray to get rid of anything that sprouts. Buy quality feed, the junk is being dumped on the ground by the birds because they don't like it! Wild Bird Centers sells good stuff and they can advise you. Personally, I wouldn't microwave the seed. Microwaving food is not good for humans or animals (my opinion).
