Just so's we're all cool on this...

Was not advocating anything - was asking about the impact hoping that I could find out actual effects - from Enzyme's post it sounds like I have an answer to that since there are other nasty components.

I promise to stick to Bermuda and WILL give the other suggestions a shot.... just want to clear the air a tad and make clear that I don't advocate any chemical unless/until I see some good solid data about it's impacts.

We all friends ??? :-)

Okay - back to Bermuda....

OK, I was wrong....

Been doing a little research on this and some other related topics and don't like the results. Anything that doesn't break down quickly into inert ingredients is no longer kosher around here - yeah, you made me get all logical and check it out and yeah, the answer is pretty clear.

Pests.

Now go answer my disposal post.

And just for Moderator obedience...

We live West of Fort Worth, in the country, and would like to have a low maintance lawn - - It might get watered once a week and mowed less often. We sodded the back with Buffalo and love the look of the grass - - However, the weeds are taking it over....it is bad!!!

So we've decided to seed the rest of the yard with Bermuda (may even overspray the buffalo with Bermuda and let it choke the buffalo and it's weeds out). What would be a good low maintance Bermuda grass? Common, Tif etc. One person has even suggested Giant(a coastal Bermuda) Any suggestions would be a help.

Don't know if anyone has recommended this yet since the post kinda lost me in spots. I've planted Celebartion Bermuda back in February and it is VERY beautiful today.. .it's not August and 112 degrees yet but I'll keep you up to date as it grows. So far it has more horizontal growth

Are you in Salado? Pretty area.
Have you any flower beds? If so, how do you keep the Bermuda out?

Actually I'm in Burnet County - East of Williamson and North of Travis and SouthWest of Bell Counties...a lot of rock in the area.
I have 4 beds where the bermuda is growing and all have been lined with 4" metal edging and limestone bricks hide the edging and hold in a sandstone pathway embedded in decomposed granite. From what i have read about Celebration Bermuda is that is not quite as "invasive" as common and other types of Bermuda...but I'll keep my eye on it for sure. It is has better drought tolerance and "good"shade tolerance and more horizontal growth than verticle growth - which I can attest to. I've mowed twice since February and I have yet to scalp it as most other varieties call for. It is not hot yet, which from what I understand bermuda really loves so that may change as summer gets closer. Now on to watering schedule. Besides keeping it wet for the first few weeks of laying the sod in I've only watered twice deeply - but that is probably from the good rains we've had around lately. It is a really deep shade of green now and looking better everyday. I have pampered it a little by spraying it with 1 tbs of fish emulsion, 2 tablespoons of molasses, 1 tbs of medina plus and 1 tbs of hastagro - mixed and distributed with hose end sprayer as well as 1 treatment of LadyBug 8-2-4....and a thin layer of compost too. Well it is 7:00am and time to get outside. Hope this helps a little.
Jeff

Interesting. I have not heard of "Celebration". More horizontal growth would tend to make me think more invasive, though. :?
I do not believe in scalping anything. Not unless you are trying to kill it.

Mark me down as another buffalo casualty. Followed all reccomendations and ended up with a lawn of brown buffalo grass and mountains of weeds for the compost pile every week. I'm overseeding buffalo w/ bermuda ASAP.

I'd get zoy but at this point I can't wait until the fall to seed it in.

Was thinking about putting down a thin layer of organic compost? Would this be beneficial? Should I include anything else?
I'm new to the organic game.

Is there a shade tolerant variety of bermuda grass or something similar for the San Antonio area? A friend of mine has taken to heart some of the info I found on bermuda grass but is having some difficulty in a very shady portion of the yard. Will the bermuda do well in shade or just slowly die?

There is no shade-tolerant bermuda. It needs full sun or it will die.

Horse herb is a good option for a shady area. Very low growing, native and can take some traffic.

Okay folks,
What is the best bermuda to plant to make hay? You know, low maintenance, vertical growth, drought tolerant, etc.
And what preparation is necessary for planting? I tried planting years ago and got a great crop of weeds.
