Over a year ago, a bird landed on a young Bald Cyress tree in my yard and broke off the leader branch. After more than a year, no new leader has emerged. The tree is growing great, just not vertically.

Do I need to trim some of the upper horizontal branches to encourage a new leader? At the rate things are going, this tree will not grow taller that 6 feet tall.

I have included a couple pictures below to help with the diagnosis.

Thanks in advance for any help!
