My wife and I bought her grandparents house a little over a year ago. About six months before that the town we live in was hit by a tornado up rooting several trees in the yard. The trees were removed but the equipment used to remove them severly rutted and compacted the large majority of the yard. The grass or weeds rather have come back in, however the yard is more similar to a motocross course than the baseball field type turf that I would like it to be. The lot of ground we have is fairly large and was all a very nice zoysia turf pre-tornado. The landscaping contractors I have spoken with have for the most part said that the yard would need to be completely resurfaced rather than rolled out or leveled with sand or dirt. Sorry for the long story but I felt the situation needed explanation. Now for my question. What would some of your sugesstions be? I have no real quams about starting the yard from scratch but am wondering if this is my only or best option. I have one area of reasonably healthy zoysia left that is approximately 60ft.X20ft. that I could plug from. I was also wondering what the ideal grass was that I could seed the newly graded yard with that will allow for easy overtake by the zoysia. any responses are greatly appreciated.

I can't think of another option for you. The contractor will bring in a small tractor with a box blade on the back and be done with it in a morning. You will have a very flat surface for either sod or seed. Is it too late for seeding in MO? I don't know.

Zoysia traditionally takes forever to cover. What did you have in mind there?
