I have had an Almond Verbena plant for two years, and it has never performed very well. I only get brief blooming in the spring and that is all. After hearing Howard rave about the Almond verbena once again on last weeks show, I decided mine may not be getting enough sun (about 4 to 5 hours), so I decided to dig it up and move it to a full sun location. When I first dug it up, I noticed that there were girdling roots, so I washed all the soil off to do a little root pruning and found these crazy Gall-looking things. My photo is a little blurry, sorry. There are at least 10 all around the plant. I tried to do a little research on root knot nematodes to see if that was the problem, but the only photos I could find online were of nematodes on vegetable plants. Didn't look anything like this. Hopefully you can see near the center of the photo, the round gall has encircled the root, and the little white dots all around look like they are little budding root nodules. Has anyone ever seen anything like this I hope? I replanted it and plan to do a soil drench of 2 or 4 Tbsps Orange Oil in a gallon of water. Any other advice would definitely be welcome. :D

Definitely weird. Starting to do a little research on my own...found this interesting article on nematodes if anyone is interested. It is very extensive http://www.aces.edu/pubs/docs/A/ANR-0689/
No pictures, of course, darn it. I guess I'm halfway convinced that I have some type of nematode. The article discusses numerous nematodes, not just root-knot. I guess the only way to truly know if I have nematodes is to get a soil test. Gonna look into that next. Or maybe plant annuals nearby and pull them up and check their roots. That's a thought.

The solutions that the article gave were definitely not organic, so I won't be doing any of them. But I learned that my habits of moving plants around all the time, and not "sterilizing" my shovels - (ya right, who has the time for that) may have infested other parts of my property. Definitely need a soil test.

Well, here is a little bit more research to pass on. I found this website that refers to something called Crown Gall. There are photos that look like what is on my Almond Verbena. It appears to be bacterial. Once again, the solutions to the problem are not very clear. I think the only thing that will help is the total sick tree tree treatment. Here is the link if anyone is interested....

Ya I think it's crown gall. And I think that its not nearly has bad as what you first thought it was. Everything I have found on it pretty much states that the plant has to be discarded, the soil replaced around it, and then plant something different.
