My local feed store doesn't sell alfalfa pellets, but he has soy and said that they're 40% protein. Is that better/worse/equal to the alfalfa pellets? Is it okay for my soil as a fertilizer? I can get 40lbs for $5 and need about 120lbs.

Thanks!

(((UPDATE))) I spoke with a person at Tractor Supply, and they said that their alfalfa pellets are 14% protein. However, it runs almost 3x the cost of the soy pellets that my local guy wants to sell me. So my question is, is it the protein itself that's so good for the microbes in my soil?

Could you please post the name and address of your feed store?
I've never heard of solo soy pellets. 40 lbs. for $5 at 40% protein would be a great buy. It would be great to know where they are coming from and how they are produced.

They are both legumes and fix their own nitrogen, but I believe alfalfa is easier on the environment. If your only concern is the price, go with soy, you can add good less expensive compost for your carbon to balance out the nitrogen in the soy protein.

If you want a less expensive, well rounded product that is a waste product( not a food for animals, like alfalfa and soy) then make a few visits to local coffee shops to pick up their spent grounds. They can be worked directly into the soil.

Soy is higher in protein than any other natural grain type material. Corn gluten meal is a processed product, but it is higher in protein.
