I just heard on the 5pm news on channel 4 that Dallas County wants to start aerial spraying for mosqitos! Betty Culbreath (sp) said Dallas is close to an emergency situation and will spray whether the City of Dallas signs off on this or not. I called Valetta Lills office to speak to her but she wasn't in, and is going to call me back. I cant believe someone so uninformed can put all of our health in jeopardy. Call your city council member and let them know how dangerous this will be for all of us!

Well, actually Betty is the Director, but Dr. H (I can't spell his entire name correctly) is the one who makes the medical decision. I also disagree strongly with aerial spraying for mosquitoes for West Nile. We have had so little rain this summer that aerial spraying is pretty useless even if I did agree with using aerial spraying. Their justification for aerial spraying in Dallas is that "Houston does it all the time"..but, Houston has lots more water, even in the driest of summers.
I called Lois Finklestein right after I heard about this so-called 'emergency'. What good it will do? I don't know. I only know that I am going to keep myself and my dogs indoors tonight.

Valetta Lill called me back and she said the best thing we can do is contact our County Commissioners and go and speak at their next meeting. She agreed that it seems like their minds are already made up...

I have been trying to teach people how to use more productive techniques for decades and how to totally eliminate toxins and use organic techniques for almost 17 years now. This latest idea to aerial spray Dallas county with pesticides to try to control mosquitoes is the dumbest thing I have ever heard of. Leslie has probably sent you some information by now. I don't ask for activism too often but this is a place for it. Raise hell in any way you can. Thanks very much.

Well, I don't know if it was the phone calls to City Council people, or the call placed to County Commissioner John Wiley Price...but the powers that be decided NOT to do the aerial spraying. The HHS people met with actual practicing physicians who told them that the dangers of the aerial spraying were more than the risk of West Nile virus to the general population. The docs gave Betty Culbreath a lot of information...
Something worked - and whatever it was I hope that it works again!
