One of the field trips at the Red River Birding Festival visited the Denison Dam on Lake Texhoma. This is one of the best locations to see Bald Eagles in Texas. This particular trip recorded about a dozen eagles, and one unfortunate duck.

The duck was a Long-tailed Duck. Long-tailed Ducks are rare in this area, with one or two showing up every 3-4 years.

While the birders were enjoying this rare bird, it flew up and started flying around the area below the dam. Unfortunately, it flew right into a power line and dropped dead into the middle of the river--transferred in a matter of seconds from a great find for birders to dinner for an eagle.
