Webinar series: Inquiry into Radioactivity with Dr. Andy Johnson

Please join us on May 27, when Dr. Andy Johnson shared his Inquiry to Radiation project.

The Inquiry into Radioactivity (IiR) project has created tools, course materials, and strategies for helping  students develop radiation literacy. Despite its prevalence in our lives from diagnostic X-rays, radon, and the background radiation, and despite America’s heavy reliance on nuclear power, radiation is still waiting to be elevated to a mainstream topic.  As a matter of basic literacy, everyone should know what ionizing radiation is, where it comes from, and how it can harm people.

Even nonscience students can understand basic ideas about radiation. The IiR project offers a complete set of inquiry-based course materials that can be used in high school or introductory college courses. This brief webinar will introduce key points about radiation literacy, and focus on the Atom Builder - a web-based simulator for teaching the basic structure and behaviors of atoms.  The Atom Builder is useful for introducing general atomic structure, ions, isotopes, and radioactivity of atoms.

Dr. Andy Johnson is a faculty member at Black Hills State University, and director of the IiR project. Dr. Johnson has made numerous presentations on research findings related to atomic and radiation literacy. He also has co-hosted Modeling workshops for South Dakota science teachers.

Zoom Password and link will be shared in conformation email.
